After Memorial Day, summer is unofficially here! It’s time for BBQs, hikes, swimming, camping and much more. And for those of us who have furry friends, it’s the season for outdoor adventures with our four-legged companions. So, take a moment to prep your pet with these tips and picks, then enjoy the warm weather fun!

Health Check In. This is a great time of year to make sure you are up to date on all vaccines, especially if you have a water-loving dog or plan to board your pet during your vacation. Schedule a quick vet visit to re-up rabies or Bordetella shots, plus anything else they need. And don’t forget heartworm meds, during mosquito season heartworm transmission is at its peak.

Banish Bugs. While everyone loves summer, no one likes the bugs or bug bites. While you are lighting citronella candles and stocking up on sprays for you and your family, keep your pet free of fleas and ticks too. Now that the air is warm, these pests are more prevalent, so add a monthly dose of preventative meds so everyone can relax outdoors!

Watch Windows. We all love a beautiful breeze flowing through our homes, and our animals are no exception. Now that windows are open, add and secure screens, especially on the second and third floors or if you live on a high-floor in an apartment building—this way the air gets without our pets getting out.

Find Your Pack. The summer can be super busy, so having a few pet professionals on hand to help you out is a definite must. Let’s Go Canine right across from Riverwalk features a great doggie daycare program that will have your pup playing with friends all day long—and with a climate-controlled environment and covered outdoor areas, this is a great time to check them out.
